Jun 04 2010 In  1996 my husband and I had been trying to get pregnant, we saw different doctors and we felt that they didn’t necessarily know what was going on but they tried different things that really didn’t work with us as a couple or with me as a person and that was very exhausting. There are many reasons why somebody can’t have children and sometimes they can be understandable from the medical standpoint and many times there is a lot of guesses, maybe it’s this or maybe that. In our case, there was no real explanation. In 1996 I was reading and studying about the many benefits of essential oils at the same time I was introducing aromatherapy and essential oils to the Ecuadorian market and I was very eager to learn more about the different benefits it had. Here are the different benefits of aromatherapy and how they applied to my case:
  1. Aromatherapy can be help to calm down, relax, live in the moment. ~ This is such an important factor, because when a couple is going through an infertility problem it is very difficult to just relax and enjoy.
  2. There are certain essential oils that can help men and women balance their hormonal and reproductive systems.~ After years of conventional fertility treatments, we sure needed some help in that department!
  3. Whenever essential oils come into your body they can stimulate the different ducts of drainage. Some will stimulate the skin, some others will stimulate your kidneys or the lungs. Whenever they come into your body they will leave and release or take toxins with them. ~ After four years of toxins, it was important for us to remove them.
  4. In general, essential oils tune up your body!
So  I decided to do an aromatherapy blend of essential oils and we started to play with each other, to give each other massages on a daily basis and instead of focusing on having babies, we focused on restoring our bodies, on reinventing our relationship. The result: Juan Martin was conceived a month later! What are the oils I used? I’m glad you asked! Cristina’s blend: fennel, clary sage, geranium, lavender, grapefruit.  This actually is a blend that I currently sell in my Aromandina line as Woman’s Help Body Oil. Martin’s blend: the same, plus 4 drops each of  basil and spruce essential oil. I don’t promote fertility treatments, I always tell my clients that this is a step to restore your body, to bring it back to balance and that eventually it may bring results. Eventually at least 20 couples have seen results since my first experience. My story begins in 1996.  My husband and I had been trying to get pregnant for 4 years. We were trying to have babies and had gone through lots and lots of fertility treatments. We didn’t do the invitro-fertilization as we thought that would be the last resort. Basically, we had decided already for about 2 or 3 months that we wouldn’t do anything else to try and get pregnant. That is a very difficult process, because you see different doctors and all of them see you not really as a person, but as a uterus or ovaries or as sexual organs more than as a person. They work only on the physiology of the infertility problem.  In my experience the doctors didn’t necessarily know what was going on but they tried different things that really didn’t work with us as a couple or with me as a person and that was very exhausting.  You may have experienced something similar.

If you can’t get pregnant then you must become aware of this insidious and widespread substance which can not only make you infertile but has been shown to contribute to breast cancer.

Stay Clear From Parabens What are parabens? Parabens are a group of chemicals (methylparaben E218, ethylparaben E214, propylparaben E216, butylparaben- no number) with widespread use from cosmetic and personal hygiene industries to food and pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Why are they used?

Parabens are antimicrobial and antifungal which makes them an ideal preservative in so many products.

Where are they found?

Shampoos, conditioners, body lotions, tooth paste, mouth wash, deodorant, antiperspirant, moisturizers, shaving gels, lubricants, spray tanning solutions, sunscreens, medical ointments and tablets, processed foods, face powders, foundations to name a few.

Why are they dangerous?

Parabens are estrogen mimickers. What this means is they can dock onto a cell receptor reserved for estrogen and cause the cell to behave as if real estrogen has docked. All hormones in the body are released at specific times and in specific order under the guidance of the endocrine system. When this immaculate orchestration becomes disrupted by estrogen mimickers from outside sources (food, air, water, cosmetics, personal hygiene items etc…) hormonal chaos ensues; cells start sending feedback to the endocrine system that they received estrogen when none was sent to them, the endocrine system responds with hormones which are not intended at this time and before you know it irregular periods, too much estrogen, not enough progesterone, not enough testosterone and host of other hormonal imbalances begin. To give you an analogy, this would be like someone turning on the sun in the middle of the night when nature is set to sleep and rest. Parabens have been linked to breast cancer, breast tumors (parabens have been found inside breast tumors when the tumor was autopsied), weight gain, abnormal fetal development, male reproductive abnormalities, depression and infertility.

Can’t get pregnant? How can parabens lead to infertility?

When your body’s hormones are out of balance, your ability to produce healthy eggs and sperm as well as your ability to ovulate and prepare the uterine lining (endometrium) for conception becomes difficult and impaired.

How do they get inside us and why can they cause all these health problems?

Parabens can be easily absorbed through the skin, the gastric mucosa (digestive system) and via the blood. Once inside the body they tend to bio-accumulate in the fatty tissue and breast tissue (which is mostly fat). Because our body stores parabens, over time, so many have been stored that their effect on the body becomes overwhelming resulting in hormonal imbalance and disease.

Below is a table from the Breast Cancer Fund (www.breastcancerfund.org), showing the link between breast cancer and chemicals found in everyday products.

Protect Yourself and Your Family

Become vigilant about parabens. Screen every product you buy for methylparaben E218, ethylparaben E214, propylparaben E216, butylparaben (no number) and any other chemical name ending in ‘paraben’. Refuse to buy products from companies which have not stopped using parabens. The negative health effects of parabens have been well studied and documented. And while some companies are banning parabens from their production there are still many which prefer to use this cheap preservative rather than switching to more expensive natural preservatives. There are natural preservatives such as grape seed, which can be found in many natural organic personal hygiene products, cosmetics and organic food.

Spread the word and share this information with your family and friends and especially those who can’t get pregnant. No one wants to see a loved one die from breast cancer or prostate cancer and so many men and women simply are unaware of the link between their tooth paste, deodorant, body lotion or foundation and infertility or breast/prostate cancer.

What are your thoughts? Are you already using all natural and organic cosmetics and personal care products?

Mar 10 2010 Owing to stress and stagnant lifestyles, more and more couples are falling prey to infertility every day. What follows is a rigorous treatment involving hormones and other medication which causes a lot of stress to the mind and body. Being unable to conceive causes immense anxiety and frustration which only grows with time – this worsens the hormonal imbalance and further reduces a woman’s chances of becoming a mother. I can relate to the feeling as I have been through the same dilemma 16 years ago when I was trying to get pregnant.  After 4 years of incessant but failed attempts, I created an essential oil blend based on my knowledge of aromatherapy.  My husband and I used this fertility aromatherapy blend during couple massage sessions. The essential oils played an important role in restoring our hormonal balance and within a month, I was on my way to motherhood!  Essential oils have helped me in every phase of pregnancy and for many years after that.  I have only aromatherapy to thank for blessing us with a healthy and cheerful child like Juan Martin. Juan Martin, my aromatic son   I am glad to say that I have been able to help many women overcome their infertility problems and become happy and proud mothers. The underlying causes of infertility in these women may be varied but the one common denominator was their anxiety to get pregnant and their disappointment when they tested negative month after month. Some of them combined my fertility aromatherapy blend and advice with other treatments – holistic, allopathic or both and some of them just used my oils. There may be several physiological factors that can explain why essential oils could have helped to conceive- their relaxant properties, their ability to promote circulation, their phytohormonal properties or all of the above. My personal experiences inspired me to formulateWoman’s Help Body Oil, a special massage oil that incorporates the goodness of 4 highly effective essential oils that work on a woman’s body in different ways.
  • Geranium Essential Oil :  Balances out the hormones and stimulates the adrenal cortex. Works as an uterine and ovarian tonic. ¹
  • Clary Sage Essential Oil : Helpful in relieving feminine problems, stress, depression and anxiety. It’s also said that it imitates estrogen, the feminine hormone.
  • Lavender Essential Oil: Calms and relaxes the mind. Extremely beneficial for people who are in an unbalanced emotional state. ²
  • Fennel Essential Oil: Has been known for thousands of years for its effects on the female reproductive system.  Helps regularize menstrual cycle, specially scanty and painful periods. ³
Other very effective essential oils for infertility are: Cypress, Basil,  Niaouli and Rose Maroc. Just add 5 drops of each oil to the Woman’s Help Body Oil.  It’s important to know that the above mentioned essential oil blend works for women and for men. I would like to share my beautiful experience with all couples out there who suffer from different causes of infertility. Although it may not be the ultimate cure, it certainly helps in more ways than one. A relaxing aromatherapy massage concentrating on the abdomen and limbs has a physical as well as emotional benefit. The massage relaxes your mind and stimulates the reproductive organs while the essential oils do their job.
  • Involving your partner in the process can bring you closer on a physical and emotional level. Indulge in couple massages to detoxify your bodies and build up intimacy.
  • The use of essential oils does not interfere with any other treatments that you may be undergoing for infertility; in fact, it complements them.
  • Instead of focusing on the end result, focus on the opportunity to enjoy this time of rediscovering as a couple.
  • Feel good about your body and enjoy the process rather than worrying about the results.
The secret to success lies in cultivating a positive attitude towards yourself and your relationship with your partner.
