My little sister gave birth this week to a beautiful boy and I’m very excited.  I remember how aromatherapy made the birth of my son so magical  and how essential oils helped at every step of the way.

Since I wanted my sister’s birthing experience to be as pleasant and memorable as mine, I prepared an aromatherapy package with the basic essential oils that helped her in her journey.

Perineum:
In a 4 oz bottle  of golden jojoba oil, I have added 20 drops of Rose Maroc. I have asked her to rub a little oil along the perineum to encourage elasticity in the area and prevent tearing during childbirth.

Contractions: Once the contractions started, my sister’s husband and I took turns to give her a massage on her lower back with LABOR Blend.
The oils in this blend helped with the pain and aided the uterus in doing its job.  These essential oils also promote circulation, calm the central nervous system and alleviate anxiety.  Not only is this blend a uterine tonic that facilitates birth, it has a contractive effect, which pulls together dilated tissues, and thus is very beneficial in bringing the uterus back to its original shape after birth as well.

A lower back massage given by a her husband,  provided reassurance, renewed her energy and helped her move gracefully through the different stages of childbirth.

Anxiety:
To the pre-formulated essential oil blend called RADIARE I added 10 drops of rose essential oil for its feminine and uplifting effect.  This essential oil blend helped her maintain a positive mood during the whole process, and helped ease anxiety and nervousness.  She put a couple of drops on a tissue and breathed deeply from it.  After birth, this blend of essential oils is an excellent remedy to prevent depression and to boost self-esteem.

The delivery room:
Although hospitals may not allow a  candle diffuser, I have asked my sister to carry an electric diffuser in her hospital kit to welcome her baby with her favorite scents .Bergamot, lemon and grapefruit, which are all combined in the Citrus Delight essential oil,  provide a fresh, welcoming atmosphere, not only for the mother and the baby, but also to the husband and the doctors.

Focus:
The Alerta body mist kept my sister and her husband focused. This spray can be used as often as needed to help open the chest, breathe better and refresh her sweaty skin.

POSTNATAL CARE Breast Care:  In order to avoid cracked nipples and to prevent any type of inflammation, I have suggested my sister to  use the same Labor Blend.  This will have to be massaged thoroughly over the whole nipple and aureola area twice a day and washed off before breastfeeding.

Baby Massage: 
Massage can be very rewarding as it strengthens the parental bond, increases circulation and is said to help fortify the immune system.  A back massage is very beneficial to enable the baby to feel relaxed and comforted.
To a 4 oz bottle of jojoba oil I have added a mild and safe dilution of 5 drops of lavender and 3 of mandarin.
By personal experience, I know this will help the baby sleep well and will strengthen his immune system from the very beginning. She would start using this oil after the baby is two months old.

Baby’s room:  The electric diffuser is perfect and safe for a baby’s room.  I chose Sleep Time essential oil that combines the calming qualities of lavender, mandarin, sandalwood and palo santo.  Essential oils diffused in the room can keep germs at bay, along with all the emotional effects these essential oils have.

Derived from the Arabic word “yasmin”, Jasmine is often referred to as ‘The King of Flowers’. Being the rare and exotic oil that it is, Jasmine may sometimes be prohibitively priced or sold in impure/ diluted forms. As a result, not many people are aware of its powerful properties and therapeutic abilities.
