Aromatherapy can give you some big-time benefits, but only if you approach it the right way. Things like Facebook and Pinterest have given everyone a platform to share information — but, unfortunately, most people aren’t aromatherapy experts. That means they may be giving you advice that’s downright dangerous!

I’ve got formal aromatherapy training, and I’ve spent more than 15 years practicing as a certified aromatherapist. As a result, I know that some of the advice you see floating around out there can come with serious consequences.

Like what?

Take lemon oil as an example. You’ve probably seen people spouting off all the benefits of it, but if you add even just a few drops into your water glass and drink it on a daily basis, it can burn your mouth, esophagus, and digestive tract! Yes, essential oils are all-natural, but their chemical composition can be toxic if you don’t use them the right way.

What is Bergamot?

Bergamot (Citrus Bergamia) is a citrus fruit that is native to southern Italy, tropical parts of Asia and the Ivory Coast. This citrus  fruit probably gets its name from the town of Bergamo in Lombardy, Italy, where it was commercially grown for the first time. Bergamot is rarely consumed as a fruit or fruit juice. It is primarily cultivated for its essential oil, which is obtained through cold compression of the fruit’s rind. Apart from its medicinal and therapeutic applications, the oil is widely used in perfumes, cosmetics as a flavoring agent for Earl Grey Tea.

Bergamot Essential Oil – Uses in Aromatherapy

Bergamot essential oil, with its clean and refreshing citrus fragrance, is an effective antidote against depression, anxiety, urinary tract infections and nervous indigestion. The oil has a balancing and toning effect on the nervous system which makes it effective against psychological disturbances as well as painful spasms. Bergamot is also used in the treatment of all kinds of infections owing to its strong antiseptic properties.

Bergamot Essential Oil for Nervous Indigestion:

Some people respond to emotional turmoil with overeating while others tend to starve themselves sick. The former results in flatulence, indigestion and colic, while the latter results in weakness and loss of immunity.
Dr. Jean Valnet mentions the use of Bergamot for loss of appetite, but Patricia Davis cites that “its effect on the appetite is more regulating rather than stimulating”. 
Therefore, Bergamot is just as useful for anorexia nervosa as it is for compulsive eating.
Use Bergamot oil for indigestion, gas and flatulence.
Follow this recipe:
Combine 1 teaspoon carrier oil with 2 drops of Bergamot essential oil 2 drops of German Chamomile essential oil 2 drops of Fennel essential oil.
Massage the entire abdominal area with this blend, preferably at night just before going to bed.

Bergamot Essential Oil for Urinary Tract Infections:

UTI or Urethritis is characterized by immense burning and discomfort during urination and a constant urge to urinate. If left untreated, the infection may spread upwards of the urethra to the bladder and even the kidneys.
For individuals who are prone to recurrent bouts of Urinary Tract Infection, Bergamot is an effective remedy owing to its natural antiseptic properties.
Bergamot essential oil blends amazingly well with Lavender and Tea Tree oils, which are powerful disinfectants by themselves.
Mix 3 drops each of these oils to 1 cup of organic, plain yoghurt and prepare a sitz bath by filling a tub with enough warm water to cover your hips.
Add the mixture to it, swish it well and sit in the bath for about 10 minutes.
Repeat this everyday for at least a week to get rid of the nasty symptoms.

To prevent recurrence, prepare a genital rinse by mixing 3 drops each of Bergamot and Lavender oils to a teaspoon of salt and dissolving this in an 8oz bottle of filtered water.
Use a bit of this rinse every time you go to the bathroom to keep infection at bay.

It is recommended that you drink lots of water to flush out the microbes and cut down on sugary and processed foods as these encourage the growth of bacteria and yeast in the urinary tract.

Please note that these treatments may complement, but not substitute a medical prescription. If the infection does not show signs of improvement or is accompanied by fever or blood in the urine, consult a physician immediately.

Bergamot Essential Oil for Depression and Anxiety

According to Gabriel Mojay, “Bergamot oil helps us to relax and “let go””. This means that Bergamot encourages the release of locked-up emotions that eventually lead to depression, anxiety and insomnia.

The coolness of citrus also negates “hot” emotions like anger, frustration and irritability.

To kick start your day on a positive note, put 5 drops of Bergamot oil on a dry washcloth and place this on your chest while taking a hot shower.

Inhale the vapors and feel the positive energy charge up your body. With each deep breath, all those feelings of depression, anger and frustration will simply melt away.

Even when you are not at home, keep a bottle of Bergamot essential oil handy. Place a few drops on a piece of paper towel (it works better than a tissue) and sniff it from time to time to refresh your mind.

Once a week, add 3 drops each of Bergamot, Frankincense and Lavender essential oils to your bath water and soak in this rejuvenating aromatic bath.

Whenever you are feeling down and out, the fresh, citrus burst of Bergamot will help relieve stress and promote a positive outlook towards life.  By re channeling negative emotions, Bergamot helps restore optimism, motivation and hope.

Along with your heart, your respiratory system is responsible for some of the most vital functions of your body. A decreased level of respiratory function – whether minor or serious – can have adverse effects on your physical and mental health. Although nothing can substitute a healthcare provider’s diagnosis and treatment of major respiratory issues, there is a wealth of natural strategies available to heal minor ailments. One such strategy is the use of aromatherapy: a system in which natural essential oils are used to alleviate, heal, and protect against respiratory troubles.

Essential Oils for Respiratory Conditions

Essential oils, used in aromatherapy, work in two ways:1) Being antibacterial and antiviral, they can directly attack germs and kill them at the root.2) They stimulate our immune systems to be better prepared at fighting off disease before they have a chance to set up shop in our bodies. When it comes to respiratory conditions, some essential oils work better than others.
The use of essential oils is a sure way of avoiding the phenomenon of developed resistance in microbes as experienced with antibiotics, because the aromatic essences are able to destroy even the resistant strains selectively.” [1]
Respiratory infections which include throat, lung and nose problems respond positively to essential oils.

Antibacterial essential oils for sore throats, flu, colds etc. include:

It is wise to avoid any possible resistance on the part of a germ by always prescribing the use of three or four essential oils in combination. This multimix approach will tend to minimize any risk of acquired resistance to any one oil and it is unlikely that bacteria will be resistant at the same time to the other oils in the mix.” [2]
Stress and insomnia often accompany respiratory illnesses – and aromatherapy is a great way to unwind. To relax your body and mind, add 3 drops each of Frankincense , Palo Santo and Lemon essential oils to half a cup of salts in your bathwater, and take a restoring, soothing bath before bed.

Methods of Application:

Vaporizer An effective method of use with a sick child. Add a total of 10 drops of chosen essential oil or oils to water, run overnight. Note, there’s a slight risk essential oils may damage a humidifier.

Steam Inhalation Add a total of 3 drops of essential oils to a bowl of warm water and inhale for around 10 minutes to ease blocked sinuses, chest complaints and colds. Close eyes and cover head with towel. Care should be taken to ensure not to burn with water or steam. Not to be used by asthma or allergy sufferers.

Baths: Fill bath with warm water. Mix a total of 10 drops of essential oil with ½ cup unscented salt. Avoid: basil, cinnamon, clove, orange, oregano, peppermint, fennel, black pepper, thyme

Skin application Combine 3 drops of essential oil with 1 teaspoon of carrier oil.Aromatherapy for respiratory conditions.

Considering the complexity of the human mind, it comes as no surprise that the problems and disorders associated with it are just as bewildering. For decades, scientists have been struggling to understand the numerous  causes, trigger factors and manifestations of depression. The cause of depression may be different for each individual and the disorder often presents with varied, and sometimes contradictory, symptoms. On researching the existing literature, I knew I had to adopt a holistic approach as an aromatherapist and devise different and custom-made answers  for the same problem.

Depression and Chronic Stress

Problems at work or relationship conflicts slowly eat away your insides without you even realizing it. That is why it is so common to see successful professionals just fall apart because they are unable to deal with their anxieties and frustrations. Loss of motivation, drive and hope are some of the early signs of depression. Citrus essential oils like Bergamot, Orange, Grapefruit, and Lemon have refreshing and cleansing qualities that ease depressive stress. Their warm, fresh and fruity aromas are inherently joyful and harmonizing, particularly where tension has bred a narrow, negative outlook.  Have you noticed how positive and refreshed you feel after eating a citrus fruit? It’s scent releases repressed emotions and feelings of grief, shame, abandonment and anger. Our recommendation: Citrus Delight Essential  Oil Blend Put 2 drops on a tissue, close your eyes and inhale deeply three times. Depression and Loss of Motivation

Depression and Powerlessness

Setbacks can at times leave people feeling helpless against the circumstances. This feeling of ‘victimization’ leads to chronic despair, dejection and a negative outlook towards life. Ginger Essential Oil  boosts the morale and its spicy scent sparks the will and awakens the senses. Cardamom Essential Oil provides the much needed ‘kick’ to keep you going and encourages you to be proactive. Eucalyptus Essential Oil opens up the chest and facilitates breathing. Deep breathing puts you at ease and allows you to view problems from a fresh perspective. There is always a way out – you just have to find it! Palo Santo Essential Oil has a woody aroma that is comforting and reassuring.  It promotes stability and helps you maintain your composure in difficult times. Our recommendation: Fiesta Essential Oil Blend Put 2 drops on a tissue, close your eyes and inhale deeply three times.   If you want to have a toned and healthy skin, you don’t have to pay big sums of money.  The combination of essential oils and facial massage has been used for centuries to increase beauty and health. By incorporating aromatherapy into your daily skin care routine, you can enjoy the natural health benefits of essential oils and see positive changes on your skin. Essential oils are known to enliven your complexion, relax your facial muscles, release toxins, improve circulation, tone  your skin, and reduce wrinkles.

Facial oils

Very useful to nourish and soothe the skin and, by sealing the skin, to retain moisture. Use Jojoba oil as your carrier, jojoba oil is actually a liquid wax that is quickly absorbed by your skin and it leaves no residue. Jojoba works both on dry or oily skin because of its ability to balance the sebum production of the body.

Morning Moisturizers

Use in the same way as you would your usual moisturizer.

For Dry Skin:

1 oz Golden Jojoba Oil 3 drops Geranium Essential Oil 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil 5 drops Ylang ylang Essential Oil

For Oily Skin:

1 oz Golden Jojoba Oil 5 drops Lavender Essential Oil 5 drops Cypress Essential Oil 5 drops Rosemary Essential Oil

For Mature Skin:

1 oz Golden Jojoba Oil 6 drops Frankincense Essential Oil 5 drops Rose Absolute 4 drops Patchouli Essential Oil

For Acne:

1 oz Golden Jojoba Oil 5 drops Lavender Essential Oil 5 drops Cypress Essential Oil 5 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

Evening Care Oils

These include citrus essential oils that strengthen, regenerate and soften the skin. Since citrus oils may cause skin to become sensitive to sunlight, use these face oils only at night.

For Dry Skin:

1 oz Golden Jojoba Oil 5 drops Rose Absolute 5 drops Orange Essential Oil 5 drops Cedarwood Essential Oil

For Oily Skin:

1 oz Golden Jojoba Oil 5 drops Lemon Essential Oil 5 drops Orange Essential Oil 5 drops Cypress Essential Oil

For Mature Skin:

1 oz Golden Jojoba Oil 5 drops Frankincense Essential Oil 5 drops Fennel Essential Oil 5 dropsLemon Essential Oil

For Acne

1 oz Golden Jojoba Oil 10 drops Bergamot Essential Oil 5 dropsTea Tree Essential Oil

Usage:

Pump your facial oil onto fingertips. Apply gently to face with press and release motion.
Enjoy creating your own facial oil and see the amazing results on your skin!
