Ever play that game where you have to choose just a couple of things you’d want if you were stranded on a desert island?  For me, Mandarin essential oil would definitely be on the list!  I love this stuff!

I first discovered Mandarin oil about twenty years ago, and ever since, it’s been my go-to oil on stressful days, on nights that I can’t sleep, and even for my young son.  In fact, Mandarin is one of the safest and gentlest essential oils for children and pregnant women.  Kids especially seem to like it because it smells like candy!

What exactly does Mandarin oil do?

It gives your digestive system a boost

Whether you’ve got indigestion, gas, or stomach spasms, Mandarin oil can help your digestive system secrete bile and break down fats.  It’s also got antispasmodic qualities that can give you quick relief from gas pains and hiccups.
Simply mix 20 drops of Mandarin with 4 ounces of carrier oil and massage it clockwise over your tummy.  (And, yes, this mixture is safe for young kids and the elderly!)  – For children under 2, mix 4 ounces of jojoba oil with 5 drops of mandarin oil.

Stress bombards us on a daily basis.  Whether you’re stressed out over that big work project, something your kids did, or the mess in the kitchen, it’s a miserable way to live.  You wind up feeling exhausted, getting a headache, and even suffering tummy troubles.

Luckily, though, there’s an easy way to knock stress right out of your life — aromatherapy!

People are constantly asking me which essential oils are best at combating stress, and the truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all recipe that will combat every single type of stress you encounter during the day.  That’s why I came up with three different essential oil blends that can help you eliminate stress throughout the day — without making you feel groggy or foggy.

Here are 3 easy ways to incorporate stress-busting aromatherapy into your daily routine:

  1. –  Start your day with the ENERGIA blend.  Simply squeeze a drop onto the palm of your hand, rub your hands together, and breathe in this invigorating scent.  It’s made with rosemary, litsea cubeba, and pine — all of which will make you feel alert and focused.

  2. Give yourself a mid-day boost with the ALEGRIA blend.  The mixture of clary sage, ylang ylang, and litsea cubeba will calm you down and put a smile on your face — without the side effects that you get from sedatives.  I like to use this blend in either a burner or diffuser, but you can also squeeze a few drops into a tissue and breathe it in that way.

  3. Ease your way into the evening with the SLEEP TIME blend.  Made with Lavender, Marjoram, Mandarin, and Palo Santo, this blend will stop all of the racing your mind has been doing and leave you feeling calm, relaxed, and ready for a great night’s sleep.  I love to squeeze a couple of drops onto a tissue and place it under my pillow.  By morning, I feel incredibly refreshed!

–  If you really want to pamper yourself, I’ll mix 10 drops of SLEEP TIME with a cup of Epsom salts, mix it with a tub-full of warm water and soak in it.

–  If you don’t have time for a long, leisurely bath, squeeze four drops of SLEEP TIME onto a washcloth, close your eyes, and press it up against your chest while standing in a hot shower.  After a few deep breaths, you’ll be able to feel your stress going right down the drain!

It’s easy to bid bon voyage to stress… All you have to do is buy Aromandina’s De-Stress Aromatherapy Kit!  Or, buy it for a loved one and give the gift of relaxation!

History of Aromatherapy and Romance

For thousands of years, people have used scents and aromas for love and sensuality. In ancient Egypt and Rome, bathing with essential oils was part of the ritual of preparation for lovemaking. Cleopatra, one of the most renowned lovers of all time, is reputed to have scented the sails of her royal barge with rose water to seduce Mark Antony as she sailed to meet him. Today, the perfume industry is a multibillion- dollar business based on the notion that fragrance makes us more attractive to each other. Nature’s essential oils have been used to heal the body, enhance life, evoke memories and seduce.

How Essential Oils Work

The aromatic molecules are inhaled and carried to the olfactory membrane, the place from which millions of nerve endings send signals to the brain. The scents are analyzed in different centers of the brain for memories and emotional and sexual responses. There’s a logical explanation for scent’s powerful effect on romance: there are studies that show that essential oils can act directly on the limbic system of the brain, the center of our emotions, memories and sexual behavior. Essential oils can affect your mood, emotional well-being and desires. The use of essential oils can help enhance self-confidence, radiate vibrancy, and increase sensitivity. Some essential oils can be stimulants, others aphrodisiacs, others euphoric or sedative. Their scents stimulate the mood and psyche creating erotic sensations and awakening desire.

Essential Oils for Romance:

  • PATCHOULI – Voluptuous, evident, suggestive, sensual. Reaches deep into the emotions and helps to decrease inhibition and to enable the release of emotions.
  • YLANG YLANG – Exotic, intense and exciting. it’s believed that its stimulating and healing properties can help in cases of impotence and frigidity. It can help dispel feelings of anger, jealousy and envy.
  • CARDAMOM Its aroma helps clear the mind and stimulates the appetite for love. Spicy and profoundly sensual in nature.
  • CLARY SAGESeductive, sensual and mildly intoxicating, exhilarating and euphoric. Soothes stress and anxiety and helps to remove fears and emotional blocks allowing for a deeper communication between partners.
  • GRAPEFRUIT – Instills self-confidence and positivity. It’s tart scent invites playfulness and brightens up the day.
  • MANDARIN – Fresh, young and playful. Mandarin adds joy and lightness to any aromatherapy blend. Enhances emotional well-being.
  • LEMON Stimulant, refreshing, restores the nervous system. Applied through massage, it can help to improve circulation. Adds joy and lightness to any aromatherapy blend.

Aromatherapy Tip

My son Juan Martin was conceived thanks to the use of essential oils. My pregnancy, his birth and the 13 years that followed have been a journey of learning and discovery as to how essential oils can be part of a child’s life and help him grow healthy and strong.  But this is not only about my son; I’ve been privileged to give helpful advice to many mothers which in turn has helped their children. I have discovered that establishing a calming daily routine can help strengthen the parent/child bond, provide security to the child and enhance their immune system. Here are some easy tips that encourage deep relaxation for a child’s mind and body: BEDTIME AROMATHERAPY BATH: Bathing with essential oils is a wonderful experience. Essential oils added to bath water provide a calming effect and can also help alleviate aches and pains. Bedtime Bath Aromatherapy Recipe: 1 cup sea salt 6 drops organic lavender essential oil 3 drops organic mandarin essential oil 1 drop palo santo essential oil Mix all the ingredients and put it in a glass jar. Tighten the cap and shake very well.  Let the salts sit for a day before using. The table below will guide you on the correct age-appropriate dose for your child:
AGE Teaspoons of Bath Salt Aromatherapy Blend
Newborn2 – 12 months 1 – 7 years 7 – 12 years 12 – young adult None1 – 3 2 – 5 5 – 10 10
BEDTIME AROMATHERAPY MASSAGE: If you want to strengthen the bond between you and your child, boost their self –esteem, help them love their bodies and calm them down when they are tired or hyperactive, then a daily massage is worth the time. To a 4 oz bottle of Carrier Oil add: 12 drops lavender essential oil 8 drops mandarin essential oil 4 drops palo santo essential oil Here’s how to use the BEDTIME Massage Oil on children of different age-groups:
  • For babies, you can massage the whole body.
  • For toddlers not used to massage, you may want to start with their hands or feet.  As they get used to it, they will relax and begin to enjoy the massage.
  • The older the child, the less area you can cover although I always advice a whole body massage as often as you can.  If not, at least start with their feet!
CALMING ATMOSPHERE: Create a peaceful atmosphere in your child’s room.  The scent emanated by lavender, mandarin and palo santo essential oil will give out the message that is time to wind down, time to relax and enjoy some cozy moments with mom or dad.  You can add 5 drops of the essential oil to a candle or electric diffuser (don’t ever leave the diffuser unattended) or apply 2 drops of the essential oil on a tissue and tuck it under the pillow case. By using essential oils on a regular basis, we can help our children learn to associate smells with pleasant experiences.  The same essential oil blend can then be used in different context and will remind the child of the pleasant emotions connected to it. AROMANDINA Has a Bath Soak, a Body Oil and an essential oil readily available for this purpose.
