Cooking (check) Lunch with friends (check) Board meeting (check) Take kids out for a movie (check) Surf the net(check) Watch TV (check) Grab shut-eye (uh oh!) Does this sound like a typical day in your life? If it does, it’s anything but good news! Most of us conveniently trade off our sleeping hours for ‘more important’ stuff. The result? A huge chunk of population that is chronically sleep deprived, stressed out and on the brink of a nervous breakdown. Not surprisingly, women make up for a large fraction of this population. Most modern women juggle their hours between kids, household chores and careers. Since they hardly have any time left for themselves, sleep for them comes as a rare indulgence on weekends and vacations. This is especially true for single moms and career-driven women. The adult human body needs a minimum of 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep in order to regenerate and revitalize itself. There is enough research to show that sleep deprived individuals are more prone to illness, accidents and disorientation [1]. It is anybody’s guess that erratic sleeping patterns mess with our judgment, creativity, and decision making abilities. In fact, some studies have even established insomnia as one of the major factors contributing to obesity and weight gain! Isn’t that reason enough to stop treating our bodies like machines? If you experience symptoms of insomnia and have trouble going to sleep, take the safe and natural route instead of popping harmful pills. The efficacy of aromatherapy in the treatment of insomnia has been established by scientific research [2] and the regular use of essential oils has helped millions of sleep deprived people all over the world. Here are some essential oil suggestions: Lavender acts as a natural sedative and has a calming effect on the mind and body. Good for stress and anxiety. Mandarin has a comforting scent that helps maintain emotional well-being. Clary Sage Restores and relaxes. Its antispasmodic effect makes it very helpful in relieving muscle tension that comes from emotional or mental stress. Helps to relief anxiety. Palo Santo invokes a feeling of sacredness and frees the mind of disturbing thoughts. Provides a general sense of wellness. Aromatherapy tips:
  1. Put 5 to 10 drops essential oils of choice in a diffuser to create a relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom.
  2. For stress and restlessness, combine up to 10 drops of essential oils with a cup of Epson Salts.  The mineral content in the salts will help relieve muscular tension and the oils will induce a state of deep relaxation. Let your body loose and let go of all your worries – just seize the moment and make it yours.
  3. Put a drop of lavender essential oil and drop of mandarin essential oil on a cotton pad and tuck it under your pillow case.
  4. Massage the back of your neck in circular movements and the solar plexus with ¼ teaspoon of carrier oil mixed with 2 drops of your essential oils of choice. Your solar plexus is  the storehouse of all negative emotions, this massage will help those emotions go away.
What’s more, these oils are safe and effective for children too. To keep nightmares and restlessness at bay, give your children an all-over massage with a blend of carrier oil and your calming essential oils of choice. The aroma will help them have a restful night and the gentle touch of a loved one will make them feel comforted and secure. Specially formulated products from Aromandina, the SERENO range help you do that and more.
