Year-end is usually a frenzied time for many of us, what with the piled-up work, holiday shopping, and family reunions. I realized that only recently when I began feeling stressed-out and sapped of energy by the end of the day (the cold weather only made it worse). I have always led a busy life but this time, it felt like my body was too exhausted to keep up with my lifestyle. Then it dawned upon me that I had not treated myself to an aromatic bath for quite some time. An aromatic bath may sound like something that takes up a lot of time but believe me; 40 minutes into it made me feel like I had regained my life force and all my stress melted away! That night, I slept like a baby and woke up feeling bright, energetic, and all charged up to face a new day. All it takes is a few minutes of “ME” time – you surely owe that much to yourself, don’t you?  aromatic bath Begin by cleaning your bathtub with 2 tbsp. of vinegar and 5 drops of Tea Tree oil, and fill it with hot water. This should take less than 10 minutes. In the meantime, mix 1/2 cup of sea salt or Epsom Salt with your favorite aromatherapy blend. Once the tub is full, add this mixture to the bath water and stir well. Now, detach yourself from worldly worries as you soak in the warm comfort of the bath – this is your moment so seize it completely. Take deep breaths and let the therapeutic oils penetrate your being. If you like to meditate, this is the perfect time to do it! Did you know that skin penetration is increased 100 times in this method?  [1]This makes aromatic baths one of the best ways to enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy.  I often like to customize my aromatic bath according to my moods and health condition. Here are some of my favorite aromatherapy bath recipes, which have become quite popular with clients too.

The Calming Bath:

After a long day, de-stress and unwind with this relaxing blend. 5 drops of Lavender 3 drops of Bergamot  3 drops Clary Sage

The Aphrodisiac Bath:

Use these sensual oils in your bath and let the passions soar. 3 drops Ylang Ylang 2 drops Patchouli 3 drops Jasmine 2 drops Grapefruit

The Pain Relief Bath:

Do you feel achy and sore all over by the end of the day? It’s time to give your tired muscles some TLC. 5 drops Cedarwood 5 drops Spruce 2 drops Marjoram 3 drops Lemon

The Meditation Bath:

Transcend into a state a nirvana with these spiritually enriching scents. 5 drops of Frankincense 3 drops of Palo Santo 5 drops of Mandarin You can create your very own aromatic bath recipes using your favorite oils but do keep a few things in mind:
  1. Don’t use more than 10 drops of essential oils at a time.
  2. Avoid strong oils such as Basil, Cinnamon, Fennel, Peppermint, Orange, Ginger, Lemongrass and Black Pepper as these may irritate your skin.
  3. Avoid stimulating oils such as Rosemary and Cardamom during evening baths as these may interfere with your sleep.

Aug 22 2012 As an aromatherapy expert, people are constantly asking me which is better — burners or diffusers.  Personally, I’ve always worked with burners and had great results. However, all of these questions made me wonder if I was missing out on something.  Is it possible that I could have made my aromatherapy experiences even better over the years by using a diffuser instead of a burner? That’s when I decided it was time to set out on a quest for the truth!

Here’s what I already knew:

An aromatherapy diffuser (also called a “nebulizer”) spritzes a mist of essential oils around the room.  A burner, on the other hand, heats up the essential oils so that they evaporate and fill the room. Look around the web, and you’ll see lots websites that claim diffusers are better because they break down the molecules in essential oils and make them smaller. However, this isn’t true — and this was only the first important piece of information I learned from my research! What really happens is that the diffuser takes a liquid that’s chock full of essential oils and turns it into tiny droplets so that it has an easier time floating through the air in your room.  But just because the droplets are physically smaller doesn’t mean that the molecules inside of them are smaller.  The truth is, their molecular structure doesn’t change one bit! So, what about the burners? Aromatherapy burners are two –tier objects, with a top bowl –like section for putting the water and essential oil, and a lower section for the teal-light candle which heats the water above.  As the candle heats the water, the essential oils and water evaporate. Essential oils don’t burn.

So, which is better — a burner or a diffuser?

Both offer similar therapeutic benefits.  The main purpose of a burner or diffuser is to dispense a therapeutic aromatherapy treatment to a number of people at the same time. It is an excellent way to administer the uplifting, relaxing or energizing effects of the essential oils you chose. Did you know that diffusing essential oils in rooms and houses can lower the count of airborne germs?  This is great to reduce the risk of infections especially in public spaces! Both the burner and the diffuser provide a peaceful and uplifting atmosphere in the room where you have them. Bottom line, what is more important is the quality of the essential oils or essential oil blends that you use, more than the method of diffusing their wonderful properties. In the end, whether you use a burner or a diffuser all comes down to your personal preference. Don’t let sales copy fool you!  You don’t need a certain piece of designer equipment to see the benefits of aromatherapy!

One of the most common questions I get is how to use aromatherapy to relieve sore muscles and joints.  Luckily, aromatherapy can be a powerful, all-natural painkiller — but only if it’s used the right way.  Since pain and inflammation can be caused by so many things and affect so many different areas, your specific aromatherapy blend will depend on where it hurts! Some essential oils — like Peppermint, Chamomile, Marjoram, just to name a few — are great at localized pain relief.  All you have to do is rub them over the affected area, (always diluted in a carrier oil), and they’ll give you instant relief.  They can be a great remedy for things like arthritis, gout, tendinitis, and muscle soreness. In fact, many of these essential oils contain some of the same ingredients as the common over the counter pain relievers.  The only difference is that essential oils aren’t mixed with a bunch of chemicals!  Because they’re all-natural, you won’t have any of the nasty side effects that can come with traditional painkillers. Other essential oils — Lavender, Birch, Ginger being just a few examples — are great at making their way through your skin and working deep inside your body to get rid of the inflammation and toxins that are leaving you in severe pain.

So, how can you reap the benefits of these painkilling essential oils at home?

Make your own hot and cold compresses following this recipe: –        Start with two empty bowls –        Put one teaspoon of salt in each bowl –        Add 2 drops each of Blue Chamomile, Lavender, and Helichrysum to both bowls –        Fill one bowl with hot water; the other with iced water –        Soak a small towel in each bowl, and squeeze out the excess water –        Apply the hot compress for 1 minute –        Apply the cold compress for 1 minute –        Keep alternating compresses for 15 minutes
