Aug 05 2013 6 back to school aromatherapy tips Well, the summer break is coming to an end and it won’t be long before the schools reopen again. For me, this time of the year is particularly challenging, not to mention how challenging it is for my teenage son who has to deal with new subjects and prepare to go back to a more regimented routine (like most kids, he hates waking up early!) I know that many mothers like me would be sailing in the same boat and would find these aromatherapy “back to school” tips very helpful in dealing with the transition.

Create a Calming Environment

With a new academic year ahead of them, it is natural for children to feel fidgety and anxious. Establish a calming environment for them with Sleep Time Essential Oil Blend, which will help them wind down and get some restful sleep. You may also try a bedtime bath routine by adding 6 drops Of Sleep Time Essential Oil Blend to a cup of sea salt and mixing this in the bath water. When children sleep well, they are better prepared to face the day ahead.

Improve Concentration and Focus

After having a fun time throughout the vacations, children may find it difficult to focus on studies and homework. Spearmint, Peppermint, Cardamom and Rosemary are some oils that are known to stimulate the mind, strengthen memory and enhance concentration. I have combined these oils in my Memoria Blend and I regularly use it for my son whenever he has loads of homework or a big test coming up.

Prepare Them for the Day

Getting up early in the morning is probably the worst part about going back to school. If your child comes to the breakfast looking all groggy, help them perk up with Memoria Essential Oil Blend. This essential oil blend is tonic for the mind and the nervous system, and will help you child stay bright and alert throughout the day.

Boost Their Immunity

Back-to-school time is often associated with colds and other infections triggered by the change in routine and physical environment. You can help your child stay healthy by asking them to place a washcloth with 2 drops of Immune Support Essential Oil Blend on their chest while taking a hot shower. Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Niaouli Pine, Ravensara and Lavender are very effective in fighting infections and strengthening the body’s natural immunity. I have used them all in my Immune Support Essential Oil.

Take Away Their Pains

When you child starts a new academic year, there is a sudden burst of activity, especially sports. This can lead to muscular cramps and body aches. If you are a parent, you probably know what I am talking about. Lavanding, Peppermint and Lavender have the ability to relieve sore muscles, improve circulation and reduce inflammation. The next time, instead of handing over a harsh painkiller to your child, just try Pain Begone Body Oil.

Encourage a Positive Frame Of Mind

Stress, anxiety and nervousness are all part of student and teenage life. If you see your child undergoing bouts of restlessness and hyperactivity, help them calm down with Citrus Delight Essential Oil.   The ingredients in this blend are Bergamot, Grapefruit and Lemon.  Its fresh scent can help relieve feelings of depression, fear and anger, and can help make phases of transition easier for your child. The useful properties of Palo Santo essential oil are undoubtedly of interest to everyone. For those that have sensitive noses though, my experience says that less is more with Palo Santo.
It works amazingly well in combinations and blends nicely with citrus, woody and even leafy scents.
The therapeutic uses of Palo Santo essential oil can be helpful to those seeking physical as well as emotional solutions.
Its strong rooted and grounded nature makes it very useful for those looking to take charge of their lives.
Also, for those in search of spiritual awakening, its calming scent keeps the mind free of worldly worries and helps one get in touch with the inner self.
On the physical front, Palo Santo has very strong anti-inflammatory properties and because of its high limonene content, it may even help in preventing cancers. [1]

HOW TO USE  PALO SANTO FOR EMOTIONAL CONDITIONS:

Grounding Blend

Use when you tend to be distracted and need to put your feet on the ground and be more practical.

In a 1 oz bottle of Jojoba oil add the following essential oils:

5 drops Cedarwood Atlas 
4 drops Palo Santo
1 drop Patchouli
5 drops of Bergamot   (to give it a fresh tone)  Stir well.

At night, before bed, apply a couple of drops to the palm of your hands.   Rub your hands and close your eyes.   Take a deep breath and visualize the feeling of being rooted and nourished by the earth.  Experience the feeling of being stable, supported and strong.   Then open your eyes, put some more oil on your fingertips and massage your lower back and soles of your feet.

Spiritual Blend

This aromatherapy blend will help you meditate and feel more detached from worldly thoughts.

In a 1 oz bottle of Jojoba oil add the following essential oils:

3 drops Palo Santo
6 drops Lavender
6 drops Frankincense  Stir well. 

Close your eyes and apply a couple of drops to the palm of your hands. Rub your hands and close your eyes, take a several breaths.  As you breathe in, feel the scent of this blend lifting up your spirit, separating you from the worries of the day into a calm space

Use it as many times as you need to relax and reconnect with your higher consciousness.

Anti – Stress  and Anti- Anxiety Blend

Palo Santo
’s calming and soothing qualities make it a great ingredient for a sleep-well bath.

In ¼ cup of Epson salts mix the following essential oils:

4 drops of Palo Santo
4 drops of Lavender
2 drops of Mandarin

Add this preparation to your bath water. While soaking in the water visualize that all your troubles and worries of the day are flowing down the drain. 
Allow the calming qualities of Palo Santo to provide strength and wisdom, and the assurance that tomorrow will be a better day.

HOW TO USE PALO SANTO FOR PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:

Pain Relief
The combination of Palo Santo with German Chamomile is very effective for all sorts of inflammations and with arthritis pain.

In a 1 oz bottle of Jojoba oil add the following essential oils:

5 drops of Palo Santo
5 drops of Blue Chamomile
5 drops of Grapefruit

Apply topically on the affected area, as many times as you need to.

It is very often that clients ask me for aromatherapy solutions to relieve pain. Pain can have numerous origins and manifests itself in different ways. Several disorders such as rheumatism, arthritis, gout and tendinitis cause pain in the muscles or joints, which can be quite debilitating at times.

While some essential oils are very effective in providing localized relief, others work from deep within to eliminate toxins and reduce inflammation.

Hot compresses give considerable relief and several massage therapists have shared with me that alternate hot and ice cold compresses work the best.

Massage is an age-old and time-tested remedy for pain as it stimulates circulation and expels toxins.

If inflammation is the cause of pain, a warm aromatic bath can relieve the soreness and comfort the joints. It is also a great way to detoxify the system.


Always bear in mind that a painful muscle is often a manifestation of mental stress and anxiety. The wonderful thing about aromatherapy is that it always addresses physical, mental and emotional aspects and promotes holistic healing. Incorrect posture can cause chronic pain, especially in the shoulders and back.
According to Shirley and Len Price, authors of Aromatherapy for Health Professionals, “Most people with pain usually become anxious about the possible implications; this leads to muscle tension and muscle tension increases the pain that increases the emotional response and so on, each perpetuating the other into a vicious circle that can become a spiraling process.”

Muscle pain is usually caused due to the accumulation of toxins and uric acid within the muscle tissue. Essential oils penetrate deep to help eliminate toxic build up and also prevent further accumulation of uric acid. Here are some the oils that can be used safely at home:

Methods of use:

Mix a total of 60 drops of the essential oils you choose with 4 oz of carrier oil. Massage sore areas with this blend twice a day.You may also follow up with alternate hot and cold compresses. Soak in a bath with a choice of three of these oils, 3-4 drops each: Lavender, Ravensara, Cardamom, Frankincense, Niaouli, Pine, Geranium and Patchouli oils added to it. This relaxes the muscles and provides instant relief from pain.

The Pain Relief  Massage Protocol is designed with particular attention to promote circulation of blood and lymph fluid. Many symptoms of pain relate to an unnatural contracted condition in the body. In many painful conditions, for whatever reason, toxins are held in the body rather than easily flowing out as waste.
This Pain Relief treatment utilizes essential oils that are known to penetrate, reaching deep into the tissue, assisting in the circulation of fluids which will release held toxins that tend to cause pain.

On an energetic emotional level, this treatment assists the client in replacing feelings of worry, related to thinking that life is hard and painful and something that must be endured, with feelings of ease and relaxation through belief that life is enjoyable and always moves in cycles of greater fulfillment.

It is useful for cases of fibromyalgia and chronic pain.

Products in the treatment:

Body Oil for Circulation
Pain Begone Body Oil

Lavender Essential Oil
ALERTA Body Mist

Room Set Up:

One bowl filled with cold water.
Crockpot filled with warm water on low setting with 1 tbsp table salt that has previously been mixed with 5 drops of Lavender Essential Oil.

Have 1 hand towel soaking in both the crockpot water and the bowl with cold water

Set up the table for a massage

Home Care Products:

Begone Body Oil
Body Oil for Circulation
Headache Begone Roll On
ALERTA Body Mist

Procedure:

1. Wring out the hot water from the hand towel that is in the crockpot and lay it over the painful body area. With a flat hand press the hot water into the body tissue. Using your thumb you can press firmly into Trigger and Shiatsu points for deeper release.
2. Wring out the hand towel that is soaking in the cold water and place it over the same body area you just compressed. With a flat hand press the cold water into the body tissue. Using your thumb you can press firmly into Trigger and Shiatsu points for deeper release.
3. Continue back and forth using the hot and then the cold compresses on the painful body area 3 times each promoting blood and lymphatic flow out to the surface of the body and then back into the core. The whole process should take about 12 minutes.
4. After hot and cold compressing the painful body area massage it with  Pain Begone Body Oil .
Utilize the massage techniques you have learned that assist with pain relief, such as NMT, Trigger Point, Shiatsu and Myofascial Release. As you massage, in your mind’s eye see the painful contraction and toxicity completely dissipating from your client’s body. Feel the joy of easiness, freedom of movement and release, communicating that in your touch to your client.
5. Continue in the same sequence; 3x each alternating hot and cold compresses and then massage, on each painful body area.
6. Finish massaging the rest of the body with Body Oil for Circulation. Use complete body strokes to soothe, calm and reintegrate the whole body as one.
7. Turn your client over and continue the same sequence on the other side.
8. Finish treatment with a gentle spray of ALERTA Body Mist  on their faces.

Note: Starting your client prone or supine is the therapist’s choice depending on preference.

Aromatherapy for Labor
The benefits of aromatherapy during labor are immense. Essential oils can make the experience as pleasant and easy as possible for both the mother and the baby by creating a relaxing, comfortable and stress-free environment for labor. Essential oils diffused in the delivery room will help cleanse the air and provide a familiar and welcoming scent for the baby.  Recommended Oils to be used during childbirth are: Lavender and Clary Sage are essential oils that promote peace and relaxation. Inhale this oil between contractions for enhanced strength, stamina and endurance levels during delivery. Labor Massage: As soon as contractions set in, ask your partner or friend to help you with a firm massage onto your lower back.  The combination of aromatherapy and massage will help ease muscular pain and impart a feeling of confidence and reassurance. Have this blend of oils ready at least one week before your due date. 4 oz of carrier oil 8 drops lavender 8 drops clary sage 8 drops geranium 5 drops fennel 5 drops grapefruit Pour ½ teaspoon of your LABOR BLEND on the palm of the hand and massage the lower back as often as needed. I first discovered the therapeutic benefits of this aromatherapy blend when I gave birth to my son. Ever since, I have been able to help many women cope with pregnancy and delivery.  The results have always been consistent – women have reported a general feeling of well-being and confidence.  The aromatic oils infuse a sense of self-assurance and minimize the pain.  The essential oils in this aromatherapy blend  are helpful because they:
  • Relieve anxiety and fear
  • Improve  circulation and breathing
  • Infuse a feeling of “I can do it!”
