stop-the-mosquito-blog
Ahhh summertime…

Between fun days at the beach, evening barbecues with the family, and nighttime camping trips with friends, is there any wonder why we look forward to this season all year long?

But there’s something about summer that we definitely don’t look forward to — bugs.  Mosquitoes and other insects thrive during the warm summer months.  They’re not just annoying, though.  They’re also capable of spreading infections and other dangerous diseases.  If you really want to enjoy your summer, you’ve got to figure out a way to win the battle over bugs.

Luckily, the right blend of essential oils can be your best weapon!

Most people assume that you’ve got to slather yourself with stinky, chemical-laden sprays to truly fight off bugs.  However, I’ve come up with a special bug repellent recipe that smells as great as it works.  Best of all, when you make some of this special blend at home, you can rest easy knowing that everyone will be protected, without relying on toxic ingredients.

Here’s your DIY recipe:

  • 1 oz plastic spray bottle (travel size empty bottle, can be found at any supermarket)

Jul 11 2012 If your summer holiday is chock full of fun plans, the last thing you want is to feel under the weather.  However, all of those fun summer activities can expose you to germs, allergic reactions, and flat-out exhaustion. Luckily, it’s easy to make the most out of your summer holiday AND keep your health in tip-top shape! How?

 1. Relief for mosquito bites and allergic reactions

Allergy Calm Roll On with anti-inflammatory essential oils like Blue Chamomile, Lavender and Hyssop, is a powerful weapon in the fight against bug bites, sunburns, rashes, and other allergic reactions. It can even help your blisters and bruises heal faster — an absolute gift from the heavens when you try out those new hiking boots or spend the day getting bumped around in whitewater rapids! All you have to do is apply it liberally to the affected areas, and you’ll instantly feel better. After all, summertime is the perfect time to explore the great outdoors — but the last thing you want is for your dream summer holiday to turn into a nightmare because of itchy or burned skin!

2. Manage motion sickness

Even the best travel tips don’t offer much in the way of motion sickness. Unfortunately, though, whether your summer travel is by air, land, or sea, you can fall victim to motion sickness. Luckily, the essential oils in our Memoria Blend, Spearmint, Peppermint, Rosemary and Cardamom can help combat the headaches, fatigue, and sluggish feeling you get from all of that bumping, gliding, and driving. Just put 2 drops of oil on a paper towel, and inhale the scent. Or place the paper towel in the car’s air conditioning vents.

3. Reduce your chances of developing heat exhaustion and heat stroke

Want to enjoy the summer heat and stay safe? You’ll need plenty of water on hand. Another thing you need to have nearby? Essential oils with natural cooling properties — like Peppermint and Spearmint. When you spray your body and face with our Alerta Body Mist, it will lower your body temperature.  As a result, your odds of developing heat exhaustion and heat stroke go way down! You  will instantly feel refreshed, no matter how high the mercury climbs!

4.Get over jet lag

All of that summer travel can make you feel like a glamorous jet-setter. But, unfortunately, all of that jet-setting can leave you completely jet lagged — and that’s definitely not a glamorous feeling! Instead of downing a bunch of coffee or sleeping your summer holiday away, Lemon,  Grapefruit and Bergamot in our Citrus Delight Essential Oil Blend can really help. When you get to your destination, take a bath with 5 drops of this essential oil blend included to feel rejuvenated. Need some special treatment for your feet after running through the airport, standing in an endless line at security, and sitting cramped in coach? Just add 5 drops of Energia Essential Oil Blend to a bucket of warm water, and spend some time letting those poor feet soak.

5. Conquer your cold

You probably think of colds popping up during those damp, freezing winters — but a nasty cold can pop up during your summer holiday, too. If you don’t want to sniffle through your beach vacation, tap into the power of essential oils like Eucalyptus, Lavender, Ravensara, and Tea tree. All of these oils are included in our RESPIRO Immune Support Essential Oil Blend.  Put a couple of drops on a tissue and breathe deeply.

6. Loosen up sore muscles

Outdoor activities make you work all kinds of muscles that normally don’t see much action. Instead of pumping yourself full of ibuprofen at the end of the day, a simple aromatherapy blend can give you all the relief you need. Massage your sore areas with Pain Begone Body Oil.   That way, you can feel free to take on the day — without worrying about being in excruciating pain by nightfall! If all of that muscle soreness is accompanied by physical exhaustion, the essential oils in Energia Blend, Rosemary, Pine and Litsea Cubeba can instantly make you feel alert and refreshed. As helpful as aromatherapy is during the summer, you can take advantage of it all year long.  At Aromandina, you can learn how to use aromatherapy to boost your health 365 days a year! © 2012, Cristina Proano-Carrion, Aromandina LLC

“… Because it is straightforward and effective in its application, aromatherapy returns the power of healing back to the individual, especially to the individual woman…” ~ Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt

Women’s healing wisdom

When I was little, we used to live with my grandmother Carmelita.  When we couldn’t sleep at night she would heal us of “espanto or susto”*.

I still remember vividly the smell of the cotton soaked in Eau de Cologne that she passed behind my neck, behind my ears, and on every joint while she calmly and quietly said the Father Prayer.

When I was sick, I remember that the first thing my mom would do was to put her hand on my forehead.  The warmth and feeling of reassurance I had from that gesture represented half of my healing.  Then she would use oregano leaf tea for an upset stomach, or apply a cabbage leaf on my cheek after a tooth extraction. She also used to lay branches of eucalyptus under our beds when we had a cold to disinfect the environment and help us get better.

I think many of you can relate to these stories, where the women of the family were the primary health care providers, and who would use nature, tradition and common sense to treat common ailments.   Healing was the dominion of women where they combined the art of healing with tenderness, skills and motherly instinct.

We could say that aromatherapy brings back these traditions in a concentrated way, with the distilled essences of the aromatic plants.

Every week I teach and train different groups, which are usually composed of 99% women (another telling statistic).  One common thing in these discussions is that women always ask me questions not for themselves, but for people they want to help, their parents, partners, children, and friends.

Aromatherapy brings out MOM

Nurturing and caring with Aromatherapy:

Here are some examples to help you start working with essential oils:

Aromatherapy for Fevers

In an empty bowl put ½ tsp regular salt and 2 or 3 drops of Peppermint essential oil. Mix well and add cold water.  Soak a few face towels in the solution for a while and wring out the excess water. Apply compresses on forehead, abdomen and feet. This will help control the fever.

Aromatherapy Remedy for Stomach Ache

Digestive essential oils like Cardamom, Ginger, Orange and Spearmint are great for indigestion and abdominal pain.  Mix a drop of each with a tablespoon of carrier oil and massage the abdomen and the soles of the feet using circular movements. Cover abdomen with a warm towel or water bottle to help the healing process.

Aromatherapy Treatment for Headaches

Use cephalic essential oils like Cardamom, Basil, Rosemary and Peppermint.  Combine a total of 3 drops with 1 tsp of carrier oil and massage temples, back of the neck and sinus area.

Aromatherapy solution for poor sleep and anxiety

The calming Lavender essential oil , together with the sedative Mandarin and the grounding Palo Santo create a fantastic combination to help you sleep better.

Add 1 drop of each on a cotton pad and tuck it under the pillow case.

This is useful for babies who can’t sleep well, hyperactive children, adults with anxiety and elderly people who are losing their sleep. All of these recipes show us that essential oils are indeed nature’s gift to us.

From what my experiences have taught me, I think that it is the nurturing instinct of a woman that adds much strength to any medication. The true power of aromatherapy lies in its ability to harness your femininity.

How about you – do you feel the same compulsion to heal and nurture those you love? What successful stories do you have? Let us know about it in the comments.

Jul 08 2010 In our excitement for the outdoors, we often become careless in protecting our skin from the harsh rays of the sun. Hats, sunglasses and sunscreens are easily forgotten when there are so many fun activities waiting out there. Little do we realize the vulnerability of our skin and the damage that could result from prolonged exposure to the sun. Last week my son went to the lake and silly me didn’t realize the sun was going to be so strong! He came home with severe sunburn and was so much pain that he couldn’t bear anything touching his body. Luckily for him, his mama always has some aromatic help at hand!

Here’s how I helped my son feel better with essential oils and you can do the same:

  1. I mixed 15 drops of Lavender, 15 drops of Peppermint and 4 drops of Niaouli oils with a teaspoon of salt and added it to a small bottle of distilled water.
  2. I then shook the bottle well and sprayed the concoction very liberally over the affected area. Peppermint, Lavender and Niaouli have anti-inflammatory properties and help to soothe the skin.
  3. Sun-burnt skin is very painful to touch but application of a good oil is necessary to nourish the skin and replenish lost moisture. I mixed 20 drops of Lavender oil with 5 drops of Frankincense oil in 1 oz of Jojoba Oil and drizzled it over the skin, spreading it with very gentle strokes.
  4. Finally, I used a light towel to do compresses. I added 10 drops of Lavender, 4 drops of Peppermint and 4 drops of Frankincense to a teaspoon of salt and mixed it in a bowl of iced water. I then immersed the towel, wrung out excess water and gently placed it on affected skin, especially the back. The cooling effect of the towel helped my son sleep better while the oils worked their magic on his skin. I recommend that you do compresses at least three times a day for best results.
The very next day my son started feeling a lot better and I could apply the jojoba blend more liberally. By the end of the second day, the pain had subsided and only a little bit of itching remained. On the third day, much to my relief, his skin returned to near normal and he was able to go about doing his work. Phew! Have a Bug-Free Summer

Bugs and mosquitoes can ruin even the most pleasant summer day. Apart from being extremely annoying, they are capable of spreading infections and diseases. Teach these pesky things a lesson with the BUZZ-OFF INSECT REPELLENT AROMATHERAPY SPRAY and they will never bug you again.

Here is what our clients are saying about Buzz-Off!:

“Buzz Off is just what we have been asking for! Safe, effective bug repellent with a pleasant scent we tested it out camping and no pests! The poodle loves it too!! Thank you Cristina” “We had a barbecue tonight and I don’t have to tell you here in Georgia about the bugs! I brought the Buzz-Off spray for everyone to use, they loved it and loved the way it smelled as well and how easy it was to apply. Thank you for such a wonderful product.”

“Summers in Georgia are a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other biting insects.  I was delighted to hear that Aromandina developed a “healthy” bug spray and jumped at the chance to try it.  I was not disappointed!  Not only does the product smell great, but it’s a perfect solution for keeping the bugs away!  Not one little nibble occurred while outside!  I can easily recommend Buzz-Off to our clients and know that they won’t be disappointed in the integrity of this great product!  Kudos to Aromandina!”
