Feb 13 2011 I’m often asked about the safety of essential oils during pregnancy and oils that should be avoided.  As Shirley Price mentions in her book ‘Aromatherapy for Health Professionals’,  “There is currently very little direct evidence for the safety of essential oils in pregnancy – and equally there is a notable absence of any real proof to the contrary.” Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt states a similar opinion in his book ‘Medical Aromatherapy’: “Not much is known about the safety of essential oil use during pregnancy. Sweeping disclaimers are constantly established, banishing every essential oil that exhibits only a hint of a problem potential from use during pregnancy.  But these highly defensive statements mostly ignore the potential for problems from the conventional drug alternatives.” I agree with his statement which says, “The reasonable approach is to proceed with common sense and reason, to try and maintain balance and prevent infections during pregnancy with those essences that are known to be easy on the system or “tonics of life””. Keeping that in mind, I would like to share with you some ‘common sense; recipes that will help make your pregnancy enjoyable and healthy.

Stretch marks:

In a 4 oz bottle of carrier oil mix: Use this blend after the first trimester twice a day – morning and evening.  In the morning, think about the benefits of this blend in diminishing stretch marks. In the evening, give your tummy a comforting rub thinking about your baby and the connection you are already establishing by massaging him/her. In my 16 years of experience, I’ve never seen a pregnant woman with stretch marks after they used this blend.

A diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables and other good sources of fiber is very important. Essential oils from citrus fruits not only stimulate your digestion, but they are very calming and happy oils. In a 4 oz bottle of carrier oil mix: Ask your partner to massage with circular movements in your lower back and the soles of your feet.

Hemorrhoids During Pregnancy:

Hemorrhoids may be one of the consequences of constipation and this essential oil blend can be very helpful. In a 4 oz bottle of Jojoba dilute: Rub around the anal area twice a day or as often as required.

Colds and respiratory problems:

  • Put 2 drops of Ravensara (ravensara aromatica) in a bowl of hot water.  Cover your head with a towel and inhale from it. Ravensara is believed to have expectorant, antiviral and antibacterial properties.
  • Put 2 drops of Ravensara and 2 drops of Lavender on a washcloth. Take a hot shower and place the washcloth on your chest. Breathe deeply and allow the steam and the oils open up your chest and sinus.
  • Mix 2 drops of Ravensara and 2 drops of Lavender in a teaspoon of carrier oil and apply to the chest.
  • Add a total of 10 drops of 3 or more of these oils: Eucalyptus radiataLavender, Tea Tree, Ravensara to the tank of a vaporizer.  Mix them first with a pinch of salt so that the oils dilute well in the water.  Stir well and keep vaporizer on during the night.
Or try this pre-made blends:

If you can’t get pregnant then you must become aware of this insidious and widespread substance which can not only make you infertile but has been shown to contribute to breast cancer.

Stay Clear From Parabens What are parabens? Parabens are a group of chemicals (methylparaben E218, ethylparaben E214, propylparaben E216, butylparaben- no number) with widespread use from cosmetic and personal hygiene industries to food and pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Why are they used?

Parabens are antimicrobial and antifungal which makes them an ideal preservative in so many products.

Where are they found?

Shampoos, conditioners, body lotions, tooth paste, mouth wash, deodorant, antiperspirant, moisturizers, shaving gels, lubricants, spray tanning solutions, sunscreens, medical ointments and tablets, processed foods, face powders, foundations to name a few.

Why are they dangerous?

Parabens are estrogen mimickers. What this means is they can dock onto a cell receptor reserved for estrogen and cause the cell to behave as if real estrogen has docked. All hormones in the body are released at specific times and in specific order under the guidance of the endocrine system. When this immaculate orchestration becomes disrupted by estrogen mimickers from outside sources (food, air, water, cosmetics, personal hygiene items etc…) hormonal chaos ensues; cells start sending feedback to the endocrine system that they received estrogen when none was sent to them, the endocrine system responds with hormones which are not intended at this time and before you know it irregular periods, too much estrogen, not enough progesterone, not enough testosterone and host of other hormonal imbalances begin. To give you an analogy, this would be like someone turning on the sun in the middle of the night when nature is set to sleep and rest. Parabens have been linked to breast cancer, breast tumors (parabens have been found inside breast tumors when the tumor was autopsied), weight gain, abnormal fetal development, male reproductive abnormalities, depression and infertility.

Can’t get pregnant? How can parabens lead to infertility?

When your body’s hormones are out of balance, your ability to produce healthy eggs and sperm as well as your ability to ovulate and prepare the uterine lining (endometrium) for conception becomes difficult and impaired.

How do they get inside us and why can they cause all these health problems?

Parabens can be easily absorbed through the skin, the gastric mucosa (digestive system) and via the blood. Once inside the body they tend to bio-accumulate in the fatty tissue and breast tissue (which is mostly fat). Because our body stores parabens, over time, so many have been stored that their effect on the body becomes overwhelming resulting in hormonal imbalance and disease.

Below is a table from the Breast Cancer Fund (www.breastcancerfund.org), showing the link between breast cancer and chemicals found in everyday products.

Protect Yourself and Your Family

Become vigilant about parabens. Screen every product you buy for methylparaben E218, ethylparaben E214, propylparaben E216, butylparaben (no number) and any other chemical name ending in ‘paraben’. Refuse to buy products from companies which have not stopped using parabens. The negative health effects of parabens have been well studied and documented. And while some companies are banning parabens from their production there are still many which prefer to use this cheap preservative rather than switching to more expensive natural preservatives. There are natural preservatives such as grape seed, which can be found in many natural organic personal hygiene products, cosmetics and organic food.

Spread the word and share this information with your family and friends and especially those who can’t get pregnant. No one wants to see a loved one die from breast cancer or prostate cancer and so many men and women simply are unaware of the link between their tooth paste, deodorant, body lotion or foundation and infertility or breast/prostate cancer.

What are your thoughts? Are you already using all natural and organic cosmetics and personal care products?
