Between the rooftops blanketed with snow, the icicles hanging from the trees, and the peaceful glow coming from your fireplace, winter is absolutely gorgeous.

But among all of that beauty lie some serious buzzkills — like wintertime colds and flu, frigid temperatures that make you want to stay in bed all day long, and darker days that make you feel downright gloomy.

Winter can wreak havoc on your body in several ways:

– The lower temperatures and drier air make it harder for your immune system to function the way it should. In fact, your mucus membranes work best in temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees — which you definitely won’t see during the winter!

– Because it’s so cold, you’re less likely to head outside and get the exercise you need. Instead, you feel lazy and lethargic, and you’re much more sedentary than you are during warmer seasons.

Yes, it’s harder to feel great during the winter, but if you take the right approach, you can boost your spirits so that you feel as amazing as the soft white snow looks!

How do you do it?

With the right essential oils!

If you feel a winter cold coming, treat yourself to a hot aromatherapy foot bath. Simply fill your bathtub high enough to reach your ankles and dilute 4 drops each of Spruce and Fir essential oils in 2 tablespoons of milk.  Let your feet soak for about 20 minutes.

Want another foot treat? Massage the soles of your feet with a mixture of one teaspoon jojoba oil and 3 drops of Immune Support essential oil blend. It’ll get rid of that chill you have with every step. For the best warm-up, pull on a pair of warm socks after your foot massage and place a hot water bottle over your feet. Or, if your heels are dry and cracked, massage them with a blend of 2 drops Geranium oil, 2 drops Frankincense oil, 2 drops Lemon oil, and a tablespoon of jojoba oil.

But it’s not just your feet that deserve a sweet treat during the winter! Your immune system needs some TLC, too.

Taking some deep breaths can infuse your bloodstream with more oxygen and help your body create more endorphins (the “feel-good” hormones). But if you combine those deep breaths with the right essential oils, your body will get an even bigger boost!

Rub 3 drops of Eucalyptus Radiata essential oil in your hands, and breathe it in 7-10 times. This oil has strong antibacterial and antiviral properties, and even just a few deep breaths will make you feel energized and ready to take on the day!

Need to clear up your sinuses? Simply mix two drops of Aromandina’s Winter blend, a teaspoon of salt, and a bowl of steaming hot water. Then, cover your head with a towel and breathe in the vapors.

Of course, stress can make you feel just as lifeless as a nasty cold does, so you’ve got to take a proactive stand against it, too! Even worse, extreme stress can make you more susceptible to getting sick — something you definitely don’t need this time of year.

Lavender oil is a natural stress-buster. Use some in your aromatherapy burner to calm yourself down when things get tough. Or, if you really want to kick the relaxation up a notch, take an aromatherapy bath. Fill the tub with warm water, then add 5 drops of Vetiver oil, 5 drops of Lavender oil, and a tablespoon of Epsom salt.

Prefer a massage over a bath? Take a tablespoon of jojoba oil and 2 drops each of Ylang Ylang and Lavender oils, and mix it up to create your own massage oil. Even if your sweetie isn’t around to give you a good rub, you can massage this oil into your feet and the back of your neck for some instant relief.

Unfortunately, dry, itchy, uncomfortable skin can cause some serious stress. Luckily, the right essential oils will make your skin look and feel great! Oils like Frankincense, Geranium, and Patchouli are great at nourishing your skin. Dilute 4 drops of  any of them with 1 tablespoon jojoba oil, and you’ve instantly got a treat for your entire body! Even just a light massage with this mixture will improve your blood circulation, leaving your skin with a better glow.

But if winter just has you down in the dumps overall, use aromatherapy to travel back in time to those warmer, sunnier, friendlier days of summer. Citrus oils — including Orange, Mandarin, Grapefruit, Lemon, and Bergamot — are instant mood-boosters. Choose your favorite to use in your aromatherapy burner when you feel the wintertime blues coming on.

Or, if you want to embrace all of those warm and fuzzy winter feelings, use Cinnamon, Fir, or Palo Santo oils. They’ll make you feel warm, relaxed, and ready to enjoy all of the good things that winter has to offer!

DIY Winter Salt Scrub
Sometime ago, I wrote an article on winter body wraps for Les Nouvelle Esthetiques.

While the article was directed at spa professionals, you too can try out a simpler, DIY version of this wrap all on your own at home.

Now that the weather is cold, many of us face annoying problems like dry skin, infections and seasonal blues. Moreover, during this time, we want something that can warm us, comfort us and lift our spirits. If you do not have the time to visit a spa, just try this easy aromatherapy recipe – it pampers the skin and gives fabulous results.

What you will need:


I recommend the Winter Blend because it contains just the right mix of ingredients that are needed to fight off winter-related problems, and all in measured quantities. Here’s how it works:

Eucalyptus Essential Oil: Boosts the immune system and protects the body against disease-causing organisms. Also energizes the body when you feel dull and run down.  

Grapefruit Essential Oil: Has a refreshing and cheerful scent that instantly brightens up the mood and chases away the blues. It’s natural diuretic properties help in curbing water retention and minimize the appearance of cellulite.

Lavender Essential Oil: A versatile oil that fights depression and germs with equal fervor. Relaxes and calms an anxious mind.

We are going to choose Jojoba oil as a base for its super skin-hydrating properties. Not only is it great for dry, flaky skin, it also cleanses the pores without blocking them. The best part about Jojoba oil is that it suits all skin types.

Sea Salt works as a natural exfoliator that is not too harsh on the skin. It removes layers of dead skin, revealing soft, youthful skin underneath. It also replenishes the skin’s natural mineral content.

What Is The Procedure:

Simply mix 1 cup of  Sea Salts with ½ cup of Jojoba Oil and 20 drops of the Winter Blend. Use this mixture as a scrub in the bathtub or shower. 

This recipe does not require too many ingredients and hardly takes up any time. You can easily work it into your routine and practice it regularly throughout the winter months. In fact, it even makes for the perfect holiday gift for your loved ones.
